India witnessed a landmark athletics meet at the 2026 Federation Cup in Ranchi, where Vishal TK became the first Indian to run sub-45 in the 400m, Gurindervir Singh set a new 100m national record, and Tejaswin Shankar crossed 8000 points in decathlon.

The 2026 Senior Nationals Federation Cup athletics in Ranchi produced one of the most significant days in Indian track and field history, with three national records broken across sprint and combined events.

The men’s 100m, men’s 400m, and decathlon all witnessed landmark performances at the Birsa Munda Athletics Stadium, with athletes also producing several season-best and championship-winning marks across disciplines.

Vishal TK breaks barrier history with sub-45 400m

The defining moment of the meet came from Vishal TK, who became the first Indian ever to break the 45-second barrier in the 400m, stopping the clock at a sensational 44.98 seconds. He also improved on his own national record of 45.12 seconds, further raising the benchmark in Indian quarter-mile running.

Reflecting on the performance, Vishal said he had complete belief in the breakthrough:

“I was confident of breaking 45 seconds today,” he said after the race.

He also added, “Athletics fans will certainly keep a track of me when I compete at the global level,” underlining his intent to transition strongly onto the international stage.

Gurindervir Singh sets new national record in men’s 100m

In another standout sprinting performance, Gurindervir Singh claimed the men’s 100m title with a new national record of 10.09 seconds, bettering the previous mark and reaffirming his position as India’s fastest man.

Post-race, Gurindervir highlighted the intent behind his performance, saying, “This record is to prove that I’m not finished and still have power in my legs,” reflecting his determination to keep pushing his limits at the elite level.

Tejaswin Shankar enters elite 8000-point club in decathlon

In the combined events, Tejaswin Shankar made history by becoming the first Indian to cross the 8000-point barrier in decathlon, scoring 8057 points to set a new national record.

He also surpassed the qualification benchmark for major international competitions, marking a major milestone in Indian multi-discipline athletics and strengthening his position among the country’s most versatile performers.

Other key winners across events

Beyond the record-breaking performances, the championships featured strong winning efforts across disciplines. In the women’s 100m, Sudeshna H won in 11.56 seconds, while Vithya Ramraj dominated the 400m with 52.22 seconds. Pooja took the 1500m title in 4:11.34.

In field events, Shilpa Rani won the javelin throw with 56.46m, while Krishna Jayashankar claimed the shot put title with 17.35m. Baranica Elangovan cleared 4.10m to win pole vault, and Niharika Vashisht took the triple jump crown with 13.64m.

100m: Sudeshna H (Maharashtra) 11.56 secs, Giridharani Ravikumar (Tamil Nadu) 11.58 secs, Tamanna (Haryana) 11.62 secs.

400m: Vithya Ramjaj (Tamil Nadu) 52.22 secs, Ansa Babi (All India Police) 53.07 secs, Prachi (JSW) 53.26 secs.

1500m: Pooja (JSW) 4:11.34, Ankita (Uttarakhand) 4:12.28, Anju (Haryana) 4:21.26.

Javelin throw: Shilpa Rani (Haryana) 56.46m, Annu Rani (Uttar Pradesh) 55.61m, Rashmi K (Andhra Pradesh) 54.85m
